Woolworths

Project: 2016 - 2020 Corporate Responsibility Strategy

Date: August 2016

Woolworths is one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest businesses and most recognisable brands. They serve over 900 million customers each year, across more than 900 stores, directly employ some 205 000 people and indirectly many thousands more, through their supply chain. The sustainability priorities set by Woolworths impact the health of the two nations' economies, communities and environments.

Having partnered Woolworths for more than 15 years on their energy management and sustainability initiatives, Energetics was engaged in 2016 as the lead advisor on the development of the Woolworths Group Corporate Responsibility Strategy.

Approach

Energetics worked with Woolworths to identify and address the issues arising from a wide range of global and domestic trends that are set to shape the business through to 2020 and beyond. Collaborating with the Board, the Executive, heads of divisions and most closely with the Corporate Responsibility Team, the Strategy was titled and structured into three distinct elements: ‘People, Planet and Prosperity’.  Facilitating stakeholder discussion across these three components of the Strategy, Energetics supported Woolworths to understand and describe its impact and influence, set targets and make commitments to demonstrate progress.

Outcome

Energetics advised the development of 20 goals and commitments for implementation by 2020. As Woolworths' corporate responsibility extends across many of the areas that are also the focus of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the 2020 Strategy is aligned to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals – making Woolworths the first retailer in Australia to draw these connections.  This alignment aims to reduce risks, harness opportunities and engage key partners to drive sustainability right across the value chain. The Strategy was formally launched in February 2017 and was favourably received by the stakeholders in attendance, including Government, suppliers and NGOs. Click here to read through Woolworth's full 'Corporate Responsibility Strategy 2020'.
