Q&A with Carissa
What made you decide to join Energetics and why did you think this role would be the right fit for you?
Sustainability has always been a big part of my personal life. I was a couple of years into my first job in traditional management consulting after graduating from university and I knew I wanted to move into the sustainability, energy transition and the climate risk space whilst continuing to build on my consulting skills. When I chanced upon a role with Energetics, I read up on the service offerings, case studies on past projects and thought leadership pieces. I saw a great opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking company that is bringing innovation to the forefront of its own solutions whilst making lasting changes for the clients we work with. After meeting some of the leadership team during the interview process, this further cemented my thoughts on Energetics as an organisation, and I was super excited by the opportunity to work alongside like-minded people who share the same passion.
What does a typical day in your role look like?
Working in consulting, no day is the same! I might be working on a climate risk project one day, calculating greenhouse gas emissions another, then writing up a proposal for a decarbonisation project the next. Although my projects can vary from day to day, my role regularly requires problem solving, data analysis and research to gather insights, and liaising between project teams and clients. The variety of projects and depth of analytical thinking makes working at Energetics both interesting and enjoyable. And of course, there’s the morning coffee run with the team!
What range of projects do you work on and how do you help clients improve their businesses?
I mainly work on projects in the climate risk space within our Strategy solution. Nevertheless, I have also been given the opportunity to develop my skills in the Emissions Quantification solution on projects including Scope 3 inventory development and Life Cycle Assessments. As a changing climate continues to present new challenges, the projects I have worked on in the climate risk space assist clients in navigating the uncertainty surrounding physical and transition risk impacts to their organisation both now and into the future. Working with colleagues, we collaborate to help clients build climate and sustainability into their decision making and business strategy, and in doing so create lasting change.
A project highlight for me was being part of a team that supported a large bank to understand the physical climate risks to productivity in Australia’s agricultural sector, including conducting a deep dive into potential adaptation measures to adjust to our changing climate.
Why does your work matter to you?
One of the key messages in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 report on the Mitigation of Climate Change is that the time for action is now and we have options across all sectors to at least halve emissions by 2030. Knowing both the impact humans have had on the environment and the potential consequences of our current consumption patterns into the future without taking action, have cemented the importance of Energetics’ work for me. I know I can make a contribution to the transition to a low-carbon economy.
What has it been like to work for Energetics?
In my previous role, I was part of a business that had over 5,000 employees in Australia and over 500,000 employees globally. Coming to Energetics, it has been wonderful being able to get to know everyone in the company on a more personal level, particularly those in the Strategy solution. Everyone has been super welcoming since I joined, a testimony to the culture and leadership of the Energetics, and I have learnt a lot and continue to learn from the projects I work on and the colleagues I work with. All in all, it has been a wonderful couple of years working here!
Have you recommended working here to a friend and if so, why?
Yes! The meaningful and impactful work we do, the culture of the organisation including leaders and colleagues makes it a wonderful environment to work in, where you want to bring your best self to work every day.
What opportunities are there for your career progression?
Energetics has great tools and initiatives that support and present opportunities for career progression. All employees work closely with their team leader to prepare professional development plans which we put in place to set milestones and targets to work towards in line with our individual career aspirations. There are also dedicated hours for both internal and external professional development and training as well as a mentoring program which has been great for getting advice and encouragement in advancing my career.
Beyond these initiatives, Energetics is truly a meritocratic workplace and I have been given the opportunity to develop my project management, client engagement and presentation skills on the projects and proposals I work on and have been recognised for continuously looking for ways to grow and learn.
How have you been challenged to grow your skillset and capabilities and what new skills have you learned while working at Energetics?
I joined Energetics with traditional management consulting experience, and I have been challenged to grow my climate risk and sustainability capabilities and skill sets from day one. On the bank climate risk project, I had the opportunity to learn the concept of scenario analysis from a climate perspective and to build my first quantitative model. Over the course of my first year, I was able to cement my modelling skills and developed the capability to pull out the key insights for clients from the modelling results as part of financial quantification projects looking at transition risk for a government land and property development organisation and physical risk for a leading telecommunications organisation.
