Multiple pressures are driving up the price of gas on the east coast - and electricity

Energy markets are volatile and businesses are advised to develop highly strategic, risk managed approaches to energy procurement

On Friday, 3 June, Energetics' General Manager, Energy Markets, Gilles Walgenwitz was interviewed for the ABC News Channel. In the interview, Gilles comments on the heavy reliance the east coast states have on gas fired electricity, with a number of coal fired power stations currently offline in both Queensland and New South Wales. The challenges are compounded by the increased demand for gas as temperatures fall with the onset of winter, creating an inflationary effect on prices.

A further challenge arises, as even if more gas in Queensland is made available for consumers in NSW and Victoria, it may not reach the southern states in sufficient quantity, because the gas transmission pipelines are full.
