Tomago Aluminium is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter and New South Wales’ largest energy user, accounting for approximately 12% of the total electricity consumed in the state.
In 2023 Tomago issued an expression of interest to contract for the supply of renewable energy under a long term agreement for between 50-100% of its total load[1].
Last week, Tomago’s CFO, Andrew Newman, featured in a video providing an update on their energy journey to repower their smelter and decarbonise their operations. For this strategic initiative, they have selected Energetics to support them in the selection of future energy suppliers.

2024 has already broken the corporate renewable PPA record
As seen in Energetics’ recently updated Corporate Renewable PPA Tracker, as of end February 2024, deal volume has already exceeded 2023, the previous record holder, by a large margin. With the largest deals by an end user recently announced by Rio Tinto in Queensland and Tomago Aluminium in the market soon, this activity provides a strong investment signal to large developers and, most importantly, will boost Australia’s energy transition.
